African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina is conducting a four-day visit to Kenya, focusing on evaluating infrastructure initiatives supported by the institution.
The trip includes a review of the Kenol-Sagana-Marua highway project, which has received $191 million in AfDB funding alongside $52 million from the Kenyan government and $33 million from the Africa Growing Together Fund. The 84km route will be upgraded from a two-way single-lane road to a dual-carriageway, expected to cut travel time by 26% and costs by 35%.
"This infrastructure will enhance living standards, expand cross-border markets, and boost rural economies," stated Nnenna Nwabufo, AfDB's East Africa Director General. The highway forms part of Kenya's segment of the Trans-Africa Highway network, linking Cairo to Cape Town to foster regional trade and integration.
Construction of the 36km first phase from Kenol to Sagana is scheduled for completion by July 2022, with the full project targeting a 2024 finish. The plan also includes social infrastructure like a trauma center, bus parks, and market facilities.
Adesina will meet Kenyan leadership, including President Uhuru Kenyatta and Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani, as well as diplomatic representatives to explore collaboration opportunities.
