Wydad Casablanca ended Al Ahly's pursuit of a historic three-peat in the 2021-22 CAF Champions League, defeating the Egyptian club 2-0 in the final at Stade Mohamed V on May 30, 2022.
Zouheir El Moutaraji scored both goals for Wydad, with the first coming from a long-range strike and the second a close-range finish. The victory marked the Moroccan club's third CAFCL title, adding to triumphs in 1992 and 2017.
Al Ahly, which holds a record 10 CAFCL titles, aimed to become the first team to win the competition three consecutive times. Coach Pitso Mosimane also sought to equal Manuel Jose's record of four CAFCL titles as a manager, but the loss ended those aspirations. Jose had previously won the tournament in 2001, 2005, 2006, and 2008 with Al Ahly, while Mosimane's three titles came with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016 and Al Ahly in 2020 and 2021.
Wydad's win followed Al Ahly's rejected appeal to move the match to neutral territory, which was denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The defeat added to Egypt's 2022 disappointments, including a loss to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final and a World Cup playoff exit.
