The Kenyan government has committed Sh2.2 billion for the next financial year to address Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), aligning with its broader goals under Vision 2030, according to Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Susan Mochache.
Mochache emphasized the importance of intergovernmental coordination, stating that county governments must prioritize NTD funding through their own budgets, particularly in regions where these diseases are prevalent. This collaboration was highlighted during the 10th anniversary celebrations of the END FUND, a global initiative focused on eliminating common NTDs.
The ministry also plans to integrate Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) into community health strategies, as part of its Universal Health Coverage framework. Mochache expressed confidence in achieving NTD elimination by 2030, citing the significant global impact of these diseases on health and economic productivity.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NTDs affect over a billion people worldwide, causing severe physical and cognitive impairments, maternal and child mortality, and economic hardship. The event featured participation from END FUND, WHO, and the Council of Governors.
