Former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has received official clearance from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest the Laikipia Senatorial seat in the upcoming August 9 general elections.
Speaking in Nanyuki following the certification, Njenga expressed confidence in his campaign and emphasized his commitment to representing Kenyans in the Senate. 'I thank God for this opportunity and appreciate my supporters who have stood by me. I am certain I will win,' he stated.
Njenga is running under the Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) banner and has called for a peaceful electoral process in Laikipia, an area that has experienced political violence in past elections. 'All Laikipia residents must uphold peace during this campaign. Violence has no place here—our community will need each other beyond August 9,' he urged.
The aspirant also pledged to address persistent banditry threats in the region if elected. Competing for the seat are incumbent senator Kinyua, former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Mwangi Thuita (NARC Kenya), The Service Party's John Kiama, ODM's Julius Mamaiyo, independent candidates Jackson Thangei and Steve Chege, and UDA's John Kinyua.
