A Taifa Leo investigation has uncovered evidence that political groups are orchestrating violence nationwide, undermining national security and fair elections. The report highlights coordinated efforts by various factions to destabilize communities through intimidation, clashes, and targeted attacks.
In Murang’a County, several groups have been implicated in violent incidents, including the Nja Nene, Gwata Ndai, Lakers, and Holy Basilica factions. These groups reportedly engage in activities ranging from street clashes to organized intimidation tactics.
On Friday, two groups linked to political figures Irungu Nyakera and Joseph Wairagu clashed in Gaturi, resulting in 12 casualties and vehicle damage. In Kirinyaga County, Deputy Chief Officer David Ndege confirmed that opposition supporters of Martha Karua, known as Wasame, are using violent tactics to disrupt political gatherings.
Joseph Kaguthi, a former Nyumba Kumi campaign official, told Taifa Leo that these groups operate openly during elections, then retreat to regroup before the next cycle. "They rely on these networks to intimidate voters and secure financial gains," he stated.
Police in Mombasa have intensified patrols in areas affected by political violence, following reports of 14 deaths in political-related incidents since January. Human rights group Africa Rights urged authorities to investigate these groups, which often operate with apparent impunity.
In Nyanza, youth groups paid Sh500 daily to participate in political activities, including disrupting opposition meetings and intimidating voters. Meanwhile, in Homa Bay, clashes between supporters of Gladys Wanga and Evance Kidero left seven injured and significant property damage.
In Kisii, police are investigating reports of political violence involving local leaders. In Migori, 10 groups linked to election violence have been identified, including the Sangwenya faction, which reportedly employs both men and women to protect political gatherings and intimidate opponents.
Migori Police Commander Meru Mwangi emphasized efforts to monitor these groups as the general election approaches. "We're working to ensure these networks don't disrupt the electoral process," he said.
