The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has confirmed that construction of BRT Line 5 along Nairobi's Outer Ring Road will commence in June 2023. This follows the signing of a consultancy contract with a Korean consortium for the project's implementation.
The agreement, signed by KURA Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti, involves Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co. Ltd as the lead firm in a joint venture with Dohwa Engineering, Yooshin Engineering, and Tracom. The contract, valued at Sh583 million, will cover detailed design work, contractor selection assistance, construction supervision, and defect liability period support.
The 13-kilometer BRT line, named Nyati, will connect the former Taj Mall site on North Airport Road to GSU headquarters in Ruaraka. It will traverse key areas including Ridgeways, Balozi, and Imara Daima, funded through a Korean loan via the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) and Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM).
Eng. Kinoti emphasized KURA's commitment to supporting the project, stating, "Our citizens are anxious to use the facility and it should happen as soon as possible. You have won a very competitive contract and I have confidence in your vast experience. We want this to be the first and fastest BRT to be fully implemented in Nairobi." The line is critical as it connects to all other BRT routes, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.
