The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has signed a consultancy agreement to develop a Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system along the Outer Ring Road, designated as BRT Line 5, according to the original report.
A joint venture led by Korean firm Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co. Ltd secured the sh583 million contract. The consortium includes Dohwa Engineering Co., Limited, Yooshin Engineering Corporation, and Tracom Co., Limited.
The consultancy will oversee detailed engineering design, contractor selection, construction supervision, and defect liability period support. KURA’s Director General Silas Kinoti emphasized the authority’s commitment to the project, stating that citizens are eager for the facility and that the contract was awarded to a team with proven expertise.
Kinoti highlighted the project’s significance in reducing traffic congestion, improving safety, and enhancing urban mobility, noting that BRT Line 5 serves as a critical hub for other routes. He added that the system will be the first and fastest BRT fully implemented in Nairobi.
The works contractor is scheduled to begin operations by June 2023. Kunhwa Engineering’s Jeong Youn pledged the team’s commitment to expediting the project’s implementation.
The BRT Line 5 project is funded through a loan from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) via the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM).
