Microsoft has enabled Android 12.1 application support for Windows 11 through the Insider Program, following a 2022 announcement. This feature allows users to install Android apps via the Amazon AppStore rather than Google Play, with compatibility primarily tested on Android 11 devices.

The update, released May 20, 2022, establishes Android 12.1 as the baseline for mobile app integration. Users with Pixel smartphones running Android 12.1 may find their Windows 11 systems operating on a newer Android version than their mobile devices, a situation first highlighted in a 2017 streaming service comparison.

Enhancements include taskbar indicators for app permissions like location and microphone access, improved scroll wheel functionality in Android apps, and unified notification systems for toast messages. Microsoft continues refining cross-platform compatibility as the feature progresses from experimental to stable.
