On September 5, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Nairobi's Kawangware estate, where Inspector Benson Indeche, a senior police officer stationed at Riruta Police Station, was shot dead in a confrontation with his colleagues.
According to reports, the incident happened at around 3 am, after a group of bodaboda riders had reported that Indeche was harassing them and appeared to be drunk. They claimed he had whipped out his pistol in the confrontation.
A team of police officers on patrol drove to the scene and confronted Indeche, demanding to know who he was. Police alleged that Indeche shot at them, injuring one of the officers in the left wrist. In response, one of the officers opened fire, fatally wounding their senior.
After checking his pockets, the officers found a certificate of appointment and the Ceska pistol that Indeche was allegedly holding. It is reported that he had used seven bullets from his pistol.
The police authorities have opened an investigation into the incident to understand how it happened. The body has since been moved to the mortuary, and the family has been informed of the incident.
Colleagues of the slain officer have demanded to know how and why he was killed, highlighting the need for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
