On September 5, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in Nairobi, resulting in the death of a Deputy Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS) during a firefight with fellow officers.
The officer, Benson Indeje, was drunk and had a commotion with boda boda riders at a stage in Kawangware's Coast area, threatening to shoot them. The riders alerted other police officers on patrol, who challenged Indeje to surrender. However, he instead shot at them seven times, injuring one officer on the shoulder.
The officers fired back, and upon examination, it was established that Indeje was a police officer. He was rushed to Nairobi Women's Adams Acarde Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The injured officer is undergoing treatment at the same facility, while Indeje's body was moved to Chiromo Mortuary awaiting autopsy.
Instances of police officers misusing their firearms and harassing members of the public have been on the rise in recent years. This incident is a stark reminder of the need for improved police training and accountability.
