Samuel Njau Gicheru, a Gatundu resident, attracted attention at Nairobi's Parliament buildings during former President Mwai Kibaki's lying in state on April 25, 2022, due to his striking resemblance to the late leader. Attendees noted the similarity, prompting Gicheru to address the speculation.
Gicheru clarified to reporters that while he and Kibaki share a regional origin, there is no familial connection. 'People can look alike without being related,' he stated, emphasizing the coincidence.
Kibaki, who governed Kenya from 2002 to 2012, passed away at age 90 on April 23, 2022. His state funeral included a public viewing at Parliament through April 27, with a memorial service scheduled for April 29 at Nairobi's Nyayo National Stadium. The late president's remains will be interred in Mweiga, Nyeri, on April 30.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi confirmed public access to Kibaki's Nyari office for mourning between April 26-27. The funeral committee emphasized the event's significance as a national tribute to Kibaki's legacy.
