Political analyst and scholar Professor Peter Kagwanja has announced his withdrawal from political contests following his failure to secure the Jubilee Party's nomination for the Murang’a senatorial seat. The decision comes after the party awarded the candidacy to Kembi Gitura for the August 9 general election.
Kagwanja emphasized his commitment to development work in Murang’a, stating he would not run as an independent candidate despite pressure from supporters. 'I will not vie as an independent candidate... I want to be out of politics and support development in the county,' he said.
The Jubilee Party's selection process also saw current Kangema MP Muturi Kigano excluded, while MPs Peter Kimari, Ruth Mwaniki, and Joseph Nduati received nominations. Kagwanja expressed support for the chosen candidates but confirmed his continued membership in the party.
In a separate statement, Kagwanja paid tribute to former President Mwai Kibaki, highlighting his economic reforms and professional governance. 'Kibaki was able to turn around the collapsing economy... he liked working with professionals,' Kagwanja noted, recalling his role as a government advisor and Constitution 2010 contributor.
