Published on September 5, 2019, Derick Simiyu's story is a testament to the power of following one's passion and obeying one's calling.

At 23 years old, Derick should be globetrotting, exploring, and having adventurous moments as he figures out the next move in his career. However, he has chosen a different path. A recent graduate of Texas Tech with a degree in Kinesiology, Derick joined Pine Cove Towers this past summer, where he served as a senior counselor.

Pine Cove Towers is a Christian organization focused on mentoring young campers and giving them the opportunity to grow in Christ. For Derick, serving Christ and the community brings him the greatest joy. Born to a strong Christian family background, he remains an inspiration to his young brother Roy Simiyu, who attends Texas Tech, his sister, and the pride of his parents Robert and Lucy Simiyu of Katy, Texas.

Derick could easily get a job in sports medicine or pursue a healthcare career in line with his field of study. However, he understands the essence of following his passion and obeying his calling. He has been accepted to 'The Forge,' a Pine Cove Towers program designed to prepare him in the aspects of leadership and ministry.

During the new Forge program, Derick will be trained on leadership and devoted study of the scripture on a trip that will take him to the Holy land, Israel. His long-term goal is to be a Director of his own camp. For many parents with young children, this is a camp they all need to look forward to and pray that it becomes a reality sooner than later.

Derick is looking to develop a team of people who will support him with their prayers and/or finances as he attends the program. One of the requirements of each student is to help fundraise the operating cost of the program. He has to raise his share of $12,000 by March 1st, 2020. So far, he has raised $2,500 but needs more support. If you want to help the young man go through the program, feel free to reach him at 832-291-7231 or email him at [email protected]. You can also send your contribution to his cash app account $Dsimiyu.
