As the English Premier League 2019/20 season kicked off, Kenyans turned to Google to catch up on the latest news, team standings, and player updates. The EPL was the most searched item on Google in Kenya this August, with many Kenyans eager to stay informed about their favorite teams and players.
However, the betting industry, which has faced a significant setback in Kenya following the government's suspension of most betting companies' licenses, came in second as the most searched term.
Other trending searches included the tragic road accident involving Benga musician John Ng'ang'a, aka De'Mathews, which occurred on Thika Road on August 18th. Kenyans were also curious about the tax evasion allegations against billionaire Humphrey Kariuki, who is accused of evading taxes of over $30 million and smuggling substandard ethanol products into the country.
Interestingly, Kenyans' online search habits also revealed a strong interest in financial matters, with many searching for information on how to pay off loans, including Mobi loans, and how to manage their finances effectively.
Other top trending searches included celebrity news, such as the relationship between Wendi Waeni and Joe Mwangi, as well as global news stories, like the Amazon fires and the Wizard of Oz.
