Telkom and PEACE Cable Company have deployed Kenya's sixth submarine cable in Mombasa, a Sh48.8 billion project aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure across Africa, Europe, and Asia.

The PEACE Cable, which connects Mombasa to France and Pakistan via the Indian Ocean and Europe-Asia routes, will provide enhanced data transmission capacity and reliability, according to officials.

Telkom CEO Mugo Kibati emphasized the cable's strategic role in advancing Kenya's digital economy, aligning with the Big 4 Agenda's focus on ICT-driven development. "The investment in submarine cables is of strategic importance to Telkom. We are proud to contribute to Kenya's strategic evolution to become a digital economy," he stated.

Previous submarine cables in the region include DARE 1, SEACOM, TEAMS, EASSy, and LION II. PEACE Cable's chief operating officer, Sun Xiaohua, highlighted its potential to diversify digital connections and offer high-speed data access to Kenya.

The project's second phase will extend the cable to Singapore and Southern Africa, increasing bandwidth from Mombasa to South Africa and creating new market opportunities for East African and Southern African Development Community (SADC) partners.
