Telkom and PEACE Cable have landed a 15,000 km submarine cable in Mombasa, creating a direct communication route between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The project, valued at $425 million, aims to enhance digital connectivity across the three continents.

The cable will provide high-speed data transmission with 200 Gbps per wavelength and a total capacity of 192Tbps, significantly reducing latency between Asia and Europe. It will also strengthen Kenya's position as a regional digital hub, offering improved bandwidth and redundancy for carriers and service providers.

Telkom CEO Mugo Kibati emphasized the strategic importance of the investment, stating, "The growth in internet demand necessitates robust infrastructure to support cloud computing, streaming, and connected devices. This project aligns with Kenya's Big 4 Agenda to advance ICT-driven development." He added the cable will help meet rising broadband needs and improve service reliability for Kenyan consumers.

PEACE Cable COO SUN Xiaohua highlighted the partnership, saying, "Working with Telkom ensures this infrastructure meets regional demands. The cable will diversify digital connectivity options and create new business opportunities across East Africa and the Southern African Development Community." The system's second phase will extend to Singapore and Southern Africa, expanding its reach and capacity.

Launched in 2018, PEACE Cable International Network aims to provide carrier-neutral, high-capacity connectivity between Asia, Africa, and Europe. It joins five existing submarine cables in Kenya, with Telkom maintaining five of the six systems currently operational in the country.
