On September 3, SportPesa announced that it had made notable progress in its talks with regulators and government, leading to a breakthrough in its licencing issue.
The firm's trading licence was revoked by the government in July due to failure to meet tax compliance policies, but it has now been cleared by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to re-apply for a new licence.
According to a statement released by SportPesa, the firm has been engaging stakeholders on the current licensing issue, with the aim of creating a better understanding of the gaming industry and its regulation.
"SportPesa has been engaging stakeholders on the current licensing issue. Our sessions with regulators and government are targeted towards creating a better understanding of the gaming industry with the view of creating a shared perspective on related regulation, including tax administration," the statement read.
With the KRA clearance, SportPesa can now apply for a new licence, which is issued by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB). The firm has reassured customers that it supports the State's long-term growth agenda and is committed to operating lawfully.
"We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the government's economic development agenda by operating as a law-abiding business that is committed to tax compliance," the statement added.
Once it acquires its licence, SportPesa will join 10 other companies that were cleared in July, including Betway, Mozzart Bet, and Odi Bets.
