Kenya's international teams will no longer face cash delays, thanks to a new policy announced by Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia. The policy, which will be implemented starting with the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, this month, ensures that national teams receive their allowances 14 days before leaving the country.
Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport when he received the national team from the 2019 African Games on September 3, 2019, Kaberia said the policy aims to end the hue and cry before and after international tournaments.
"We have come here to celebrate the achievement of our heroes for doing our country proud and above all make a commitment that never again will payment of allowances be an issue," Kaberia said.
The policy also ensures that tickets will be ready one week before the team's departure date. The Central Bank of Kenya has already paid out the allowances, except for players whose bank details did not match what was provided.
Kenya finished seventh at the African Games with 11 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze medals. The country's boxing team, the Hit Squad, posted an improved performance by ranking eighth and winning five medals.
Boxing Federation of Kenya president Anthony 'Jamal' Ombok praised the national teams' performances and said their focus is now on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics African qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal in February next year.
