YouTube has taken a significant step in combating hate speech on its platform, removing over 100,000 videos, 17,000 channels, and 500 million comments in the last three months.
According to a blog post published on Tuesday, the video-sharing platform has been working on new policies since 2018, which were launched in June. The policies aim to protect and promote a vibrant community while preserving free expression.
YouTube stated that content violating its policies is removed to ensure a safe and respectful environment for its users. The platform has also emphasized the importance of preserving free expression, allowing users to share their opinions and ideas without fear of censorship.
Among the content removed were child sexual abuse images and terrorist recruitment videos. The platform has also highlighted the effectiveness of its automated flagging systems, which have enabled the removal of nearly 30,000 videos that generated only 3% of views.
YouTube has committed to continuing its efforts in reducing exposure to videos that violate its policies. The platform has tasked over 10,000 people with detecting, reviewing, and removing content that violates its guidelines.
