On Tuesday, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko faced a grueling nine-hour interrogation by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over alleged irregular contracts worth millions of shillings.
The investigation centered around garbage collection tenders worth more than Sh160 million awarded in the financial years 2017/2018 and 2018/2019.
According to EACC, the agency summoned Governor Sonko last week to shed light on corruption allegations in the awarding of the tenders.
During the interrogation, Governor Sonko maintained that he was not directly involved in the procurement process, stating, "As the CEO of the county, I do not sit in the procurement committee, I am not the accounting officer, but I’ve got the general responsibility for my State officers."
He also pointed out that the matter was previously raised by the environment committee of the Nairobi County Assembly, questioning how some companies were awarded tenders without proper qualification and due process of the law.
It is worth noting that EACC summoned Governor Sonko after a report from the Nairobi County Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee pointed out that Sh162 million paid to garbage collection companies could not be accounted for.
