On September 3, 2019, AFC Leopards announced the return of Kenyan international winger Paul Were on a one-year deal. The team also welcomed former Ulinzi Stars forward John Mark Makwata and defender Washington Kisaka Munene, who joined the club as a free agent from Kuwait and on loan from Wazito FC, respectively.
Chairman Dan Shikanda confirmed the signings, stating that Were had penned a one-year renewable contract, while Makwata and Munene had agreed to one-year deals.
Were, 28, joins the team after a stint in Kuwait, and will look to strengthen the wing, which was a weakness for the team in recent matches. Makwata, also 28, was on the radar of Gor Mahia but chose to join Leopards as a free agent.
Other signings include midfielder Clyde Sinaji from Tusker, who has signed a two-year contract, and young goalkeeper Maxwell Wasike, who has agreed to a four-year contract until 2023.
Shikanda warned that the team is now strong and ready for the season, with the additional recruits. He asserted that the team is now sharp in all departments and ready to cause havoc, with the main target being to win this season's title.
