Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko faced a grueling 9-hour grilling by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on September 3, 2019, at the EACC headquarters.

The grilling was over alleged irregularities in garbage collection tenders worth KES 160 million for the financial years 2017/2018 and 2018/2019.

Sonko was summoned by the commission last week over graft allegations surrounding the tenders in question.

He had initially requested to appear before the commission on September 3, citing 'unavoidable circumstances', after being scheduled for questioning on Friday last week.

Addressing a mini presser, Sonko explained that the exercise took long because there were 13 companies involved, hence 13 statements recorded.

He clarified that he did not sit in Nairobi County's procurement committee, hence cannot be passed to be the accounting officer, but maintained that he has a general responsibility to his state officers.

The grilling came after Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee flagged an inconsistency in dues paid to garbage collection firms, noting that up to KES 162 million could not be accounted for.
