Embu residents are facing a crisis as the only two Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities at the Embu Level Five Hospital have been closed following the theft of equipment worth millions of shillings.
According to activist Wawira Njue, top officials at the health facility have been keeping the matter under wraps, but have now been forced to come clean after being confronted by the public.
Health Select Committee chairman Sammy Muturi confirmed that the machines were indeed stolen a few weeks ago and several people have since been arrested.
Embu County Assembly Member Muturi Mwombo (Ruguru/Ngandori ward) corroborated the statement, warning that any other person found culpable will be prosecuted.
The officials faulted the suspects for aggravating the suffering of Embu residents who are in dire need of ICU services.
However, they defended themselves over accusations of being silent on the matter, arguing that due process is being followed as investigations continue.
