On September 3, 2019, the Inspector General of Police made a significant move to curb the alleged malpractices of the Music and Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) officials.

According to a memo from the Inspector General's Office, MCSK officials had been hiring police officers to provide them with protection while they collected royalties from the public.

However, the Inspector General's Office alleged that the presence of police in MCSK operations had emboldened the officials to demand more money from the public under the threat of arrest if they failed to comply.

The Inspector General noted that the involvement of police in MCSK's alleged malpractices had tainted the reputation of the National Police Service, which goes against its doctrines and terms of service.

The move has been welcomed by celebrities like Khaligraph Jones, who had previously banned MCSK from collecting royalties on his behalf.

With the cancellation of police protection, it remains to be seen how MCSK officials will operate in the future.
