Health workers in Kisumu County are facing a salary crisis, with many going without pay for two months. According to Maurice Opetu, Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Nurses, the county government has failed to pay salaries for July and August, leaving many workers in financial distress.
Speaking to the press, Opetu revealed that some workers who were paid had their salaries deducted to service bank loan penalties, leaving them with little to no money. He also stated that the union members had an agreement with the county government to take responsibility for the penalties charged, but this agreement has not been honored.
As a result, the union members have issued a seven-day strike notice, starting from September 3, to demand payment of all their salaries, loans, and statutory deductions. Opetu emphasized that the workers are not willing to compromise and will take action if their demands are not met.
