On September 2, 2019, Jubilee Party's national elections board announced its decision to field McDonald Mariga Wanyama in the upcoming Kibra constituency parliamentary by-election.

The ruling party's election board chairman Andrew Musangi made the announcement during a media briefing at the party's headquarters in Pangani.

According to Musangi, the decision was made in compliance with the party's constitution, which allows nomination through face-to-face interviews with applicants.

Out of 16 applications received, the board chose Mariga, describing him as a candidate of 'impeccable character and credentials' who can deliver the Jubilee agenda if elected.

Mariga, a former Kenyan international midfielder, had sought clearance from the party to vie for the seat just hours before the announcement.

Addressing the media earlier, Mariga had denied claims of being a Jubilee 'project' and defended his candidature, stating that he was born and raised in Kibra and understood the community's issues.
