Kenyans Impressed by Brave Corruption Whistleblowers at Maasai Mara University

Published on September 2, 2019, an expose by Citizen TV highlighted a mega corruption scandal at Maasai Mara University, leaving many in shock, surprise, and anger.

According to the expose, over KSh 190 million were allegedly looted from the university's coffers, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mary Walingo, and other officials implicated in the scandal.

Spencer Sankale Ollchike, a Senior Accountant at the university, led the whistleblowers who secretly made recordings of illegal cash transactions over a period of two years.

Spencer, who had served as the acting finance officer before his demotion in August 2017, was furnished with audio and video tapes that pointed to the VC, his replacement after his demotion Anaclet Okumu, and Walingo's driver Noor Abdi as the main culprits.

Now under witness protection, Spencer noted that his conscience would not let him live on his knees when he could die on his feet.

Kenyans have expressed mixed reactions to the expose, with some praising the bravery of the whistleblowers and others expressing concerns that Spencer's actions may have unintended consequences.

As one Twitter user noted, 'In the Kakistocracy that is GoK, Spencer Sankale will be arrested and charged with fraud. The VC, Mary Walingo, who probably channeled the monies to politicians, will escaped unscathed. Spencer will become the David Munyankei of 2019. Nothing changed.'
