Published on September 2, 2019, Mathare United, a Kenyan Premier League side, is staring at hard times financially this season.

The team's sponsor, gaming firm Odibets, has indicated they would be terminating the three-year deal worth Sh60 million, which was unveiled early last year.

According to Mathare United CEO Jectone Obure, Odibets communicated their intention to end the sponsorship due to struggling to meet their financial obligations, citing a tax issue with the Government.

Obure urged the Government to solve the impasse with the betting companies, stating that they support sports and should be treated fairly.

He also called on the Government to support the league through the sports fund, as the Kenya Premier League is also struggling financially.

When contacted, Odibets Country Marketing Manager Aggrey Sayi refused to comment on the development.

Mathare United's 2019/20 KPL campaign started with a barren draw against Bandari on Saturday afternoon at the Ruaraka Stadium, with the team donning kits without the Odibets logo, a clear indication the sponsorship has been terminated.
