Published on September 1, 2019, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that Hurricane Dorian, a category five storm, was expected to slam the north-west of the Bahamas on Sunday.
Forecasters predicted that the storm would bring devastating winds and very heavy rainfall, with a storm surge of up to 15ft (4.6m) possible.
Residents of Grand Bahama were evacuating from the predicted path of the storm, while authorities closed some airports in the outlying islands.
US President Donald Trump described the storm as "an extremely dangerous storm" on Twitter, and cancelled a planned trip to Poland, sending Vice-President Mike Pence in his place.
Forecasters warned that Dorian's wind speeds put the storm among the most dangerous in recent history, with the potential to be the region's worst since the category five Hurricane Andrew killed 65 people and destroyed 63,000 homes in 1992.
