On a fateful Saturday evening in September 2019, a devastating collision between a matatu and a canter lorry occurred at Nyakairu along the Kinungi stretch on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the matatu driver attempted to overtake a convoy of vehicles at around 8:50pm, resulting in a head-on collision with the lorry coming from the opposite direction.
Naivasha Sub-County Deputy Police Commander John Kwasa confirmed the accident, stating that five people, including the lorry driver, died in the incident.
Tragically, the matatu driver succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to the Naivasha-based hospital.
The Kinungi stretch has been identified as a high-risk area for motorists due to the frequency of accidents in the region.
Just a few months prior, in June, a bus accident on the same stretch claimed one life and left 48 others seriously injured.
