The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has issued a formal warning against an organization claiming to facilitate university admissions for KCSE candidates. The agency clarified that the Colleges and Universities Placement Agency (CUPA) is engaging in activities outside its official responsibilities.
Scam Alert and Official Mandate ¶
On February 22, KUCCPS issued a statement emphasizing that CUPA had contacted schools and principals to promote seminars and workshops. The agency explicitly distanced itself from CUPA, stating it would not be liable for any agreements or partnerships involving the organization.
"KUCCPS is the sole government entity authorized by the Universities Act, 2012, to coordinate placements for sponsored students, develop career guidance programs, and perform other statutory functions," the notice stated. It added that any engagement with third parties claiming to represent the agency is legally unenforceable.
TVET Initiative for Past KCSE Candidates ¶
Separately, KUCCPS announced a program allowing KCSE graduates who sat the exam between 2000 and 2021 to apply for TVET courses under government sponsorship. The initiative aims to provide vocational training opportunities for those who did not secure college placements through the official process.
"Eligible candidates can apply via the KUCCPS portal to pursue their chosen careers with state support," the agency emphasized. The program is open to those who have never been selected for college admission by KUCCPS.
Historical Context ¶
The warning comes amid KUCCPS's ongoing efforts to streamline admissions, including its 2020 appointment of Agnes Wahome as acting CEO. The agency has repeatedly urged students to rely on official channels for placement services, rejecting unauthorized intermediaries.
