Kenya's 2022 general elections are still a year away, but the country's political landscape is already taking shape. Two governors, Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga and Charity Ngilu of Kitui, have been quietly positioning themselves as key players in Raila Odinga's camp.

Waiguru, a pioneer female governor, has been a vocal advocate for women's leadership and has been at the forefront of mobilizing ground forces for the referendum. Her experience and influence in the Mt. Kenya region make her a strong contender for a key role in the 2022 elections.

Ngilu, on the other hand, has been a long-time ally of Raila Odinga, having been elected as the governor of Kitui with her own political party, NARC. Her wealth of experience and considerable base in Ukambani politics make her a valuable asset to Raila's camp.

According to sources, Raila Odinga has been instrumental in Ngilu's political maneuvers, which explains their close relationship. Ngilu's experience and influence in the region are not being taken for granted by Raila, who sees her as a key player in his 2022 game plan.

Waiguru's statement in Mombasa on Saturday, 'We want to warn anyone who thinks Kenyan women will stand and just wait to be handed over power, you are on your own. We are coming for a seat at the table,' reflects the determination and ambition of women in Kenyan politics.
