Gor Mahia kicked off their 2019/20 season with a resounding 5-2 win over Tusker in the opening match of the Kenya Premier League on August 31, 2019, at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

The champions took an early lead after Nicholas Kipkirui scored a goal before Kenneth Muguna, Boniface Omondi, and Charles Momanyi added to the tally.

Tusker's Boniface Muchiri scored two goals for his team, but it was not enough to prevent Gor Mahia from securing a 5-2 win.

Gor Mahia's coach, Steven Pollack, acknowledged that his team made mistakes but was pleased with the three points.

"We made two mistakes, but I'm proud of my players for showing character in the second half," Pollack said.

Pollack also praised his substitutes, who made a significant impact in the game, particularly Nicholas Kipkirui and Kennedy.

"I made some changes in the second half, and it helped," Pollack said.

Tusker's coach, Dickson Ambundo, attributed his team's loss to the mistakes made by his players.

"We made many mistakes, and it affected us," Ambundo said.

Despite the loss, Tusker's Boniface Muchiri scored two goals, including one in the 35th minute, which was a highlight of the game.

Gor Mahia's Charles Momanyi scored a goal in the 75th minute, which sealed the win for the champions.

With the win, Gor Mahia will face USM Alger in the CAF Champions League, while Tusker will play against Bandari FC in the Kenya Premier League.
