Kenya's Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has accelerated road improvement projects in Nairobi's Gigiri district ahead of the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) 50th anniversary celebrations and the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in March 2022.
Director General Silas Kinoti confirmed that preparations are fully underway, with teams working at the UNEP headquarters and existing roads being upgraded to bitumen standards. "Our focus is on creating quality infrastructure that supports economic growth and efficient transport," Kinoti stated during an inspection of the Eastern Bypass dualling project.
"Gilgil Crescent looks promising ahead of UNEP@50. As KURA, we're committed to enhancing Kenya's infrastructure to boost trade and ease movement," shared Kinoti in a February 18, 2022, social media post.
The UNEP@50 event, scheduled for March 3-4, 2022, will highlight Kenya's environmental achievements in areas like afforestation, clean energy, and waste management. It will precede the UNEA session, which aims to strengthen UNEP's role in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through global environmental cooperation.
