On Saturday, August 31, 2019, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), visited Rinya village in Uriri Sub-county, Migori County, where he addressed the county assembly members.
During his address, Raila urged the MCAs to reject the Punguza Mizigo Bill, which was proposed by the Thirdway Alliance, in its entirety. He emphasized the need for the county assembly to set an example for other county assemblies across the country.
According to Raila, some counties were still non-committal about rejecting the bill, and he urged the people of Migori to lead the way in making a judgment on the matter.
“These issues of Punguza Mizigo, Punguza Punda, we don’t know, we want Migori County Assembly to reject the bill once it is brought in the assembly for debate. We have some counties which are still reluctant on the matter, we want our people to lead so that judgment can be made that we don’t know Punguza Mizigo and what we know is BBI,” said Raila.
On the same day, Migori Governor Okoth Obado assured Raila that the county would heed to his call and also expressed his support for the handshake between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“I really want to support you Raila because your programmes through the handshake including the ongoing revival of Kisumu port will uplift our people’s living standards,” said Obado.
Obado also urged Raila to extend the revival of the Kisumu port to Muhuru and Sori to ease the movement of people and goods through the lake.
“We also have hope as Migori people that Sori and Mihuru ports will be revived so that we will have time to travel through the lake,” Obado added.
