Abby K. Cannon, a registered dietitian, suggests that these alternatives can be used in place of white sugar in various recipes. She notes that they all contain less fructose than traditional table sugar and more nutritional benefits, including antioxidants, healthy minerals, and fiber.

Here are the four natural sugar alternatives recommended by Abby K. Cannon:

  • Dates: Full of fiber, dates offer inflammation-fighting and mood-lifting health perks. They can be added to ease up spicy dishes.
  • Honey: Its heart-healthy antioxidant and antibacterial properties make it a good choice for soothing sore throats. However, it should be used in teas and cocktails, and on fruit, as its properties are destroyed by too much heat.
  • Coconut Sugar: Sub in 1 cup of these caramel-colored crystals for 1 cup white sugar to whip up baked goods that promote a happy tum, courtesy of the good bacteria from coconut's star fiber, inulin.
