Published on August 31, 2019, Rift Valley leaders have made their stand against the Mau evictions, which will affect over 60,000 families.

Deputy President William Ruto has been caught in a difficult position as key political leaders in his camp have threatened court action against the government over the evictions.

Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony has warned that the evictions will be a major violation of human rights and has threatened to take the issue to the International Criminal Court on humanitarian grounds.

Thirty-five prominent lawyers from the Rift Valley are also preparing a major suit against the government regarding the evictions, which will affect close to 10,000 school-going children.

Kapsaret legislator Oscar Sudi has fired the first salvo at President Uhuru Kenyatta, urging him to donate the land grabbed by the Kenyatta and Moi families to the squatters the government plans to evict.

"My humble request to Uhuru over Mau evictions is that he fundraised for these people when Raila Odinga was chasing them. He came in 2013 and asked them to vote for him. What happened after 2017 that makes him plot to kick them away?" Sudi said.

"Stop damaging the lives of the poor because you're not going to contest. Children in Mau are like those in your house. If you want to chase them, you have over 50,000 Ha. Give them around 7,000 because after all the land is not yours," Sudi added.
