On a thrilling evening at the Weltklasse Zurich, Kenyan athletes stole the show, with Beatrice Chepkoech leading the charge in the women's steeplechase on Thursday, August 29, 2019.
With a commanding performance, Chepkoech took the top spot in 9:01.71, leaving the rest of the field in her wake. Hyvin Kiyeng and Norah Jeruto closed in strong, securing a top-three sweep for Kenya with times of 9:03.83 and 9:05.15, respectively.
Joshua Cheptegei also made a statement in the 5000m, leading for the final kilometre and holding off a three-pronged attack from Ethiopia and Kenya to take the win in 12:57.41, a lifetime best for the Ugandan.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo, meanwhile, put on a show in the 200m, taking down a strong field with an explosive 21.74 performance, the fastest in the world this year. The Bahamian athlete blasted away from European champion Dina Asher-Smith with about 40 metres to go, securing the win and a new Diamond League record.
Miller-Uibo's performance was met with excitement, as she expressed her gratitude and anticipation for the upcoming World Championships. 'This is just a blessing,' she said. 'This is my last run before the World Championships. I am in great shape, I'm really excited.'
