Newly revealed phone records and official accounts show Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry maintained contact with Joseph Felix Badio, a suspect in President Moïse's 2021 assassination, despite denials.
Investigative findings from 2022 indicate Badio, a former justice ministry official wanted by Haitian authorities, communicated with Henry before and after the July 2021 murder. Two calls totaling seven minutes were recorded on the morning following the attack, according to phone data reviewed by The New York Times.
Despite Henry's claims of no post-assassination contact, four Haitian officials confirmed multiple interactions. Badio reportedly visited Henry's official residence twice at night four months after the killing without security interference, according to sources involved in the investigation.
A former chief prosecutor, removed by Henry, has demanded answers about the prime minister's role. Rodolphe Jaar, a key suspect in the case, alleged Badio claimed control over Henry and described a plot to depose Moïse that turned lethal when gunmen stormed the president's residence.
Henry's government has not set an election date, while six American citizens and a Colombian mercenary face charges related to the assassination. A 2022 Florida indictment linked Mario Palacios to conspiracy charges in the attack.
