Published on August 30, 2019, a career expert shares valuable insights on how to navigate a wrong career move.

When you find yourself in a job that's not meeting your expectations, it's essential to take a step back and assess the situation. In this article, we'll explore the three questions to ask yourself when you've made a wrong career move: how did this happen, what can I do to change my circumstances, and what must I do to ensure this never happens again?

For those who have deliberately chosen one job over another, it's crucial to understand the underlying issues that led to this decision. You may need to build relationships and find ways to resolve the challenges you face. Instead of running, consider looking for a solution.

However, if you feel convinced that leaving is the better option, don't hesitate. It's better to venture out and explore other possibilities than to be stuck in a role that only makes you miserable and limits your career growth. Cast your net wide, not limiting yourself to the role you declined.

When reaching out to the other employer, be prepared to explain why the new job has not worked out for you. If you declined in a polite and convincing way, they may still be interested in you. But if you declined just to take more money from the other employer, they will be worried that their offer may not motivate you to stay for long.

Ultimately, the last option is to learn from this experience. In future, when you find yourself in a similar situation, think about your career goals and consider not only how each role complements your competencies but also how it challenges you to stretch your capabilities.
