On Thursday, the Kenyan government unveiled a groundbreaking DNA test kit that can analyze samples in a record 45 minutes.
According to Government Chemist Ali Gakweli, the new 3500 Series Genetic Analysers have been installed in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa offices, and will help clear a backlog of cases that have been pending due to lack of capacity.
"The new machine can handle 24 stains within 45 minutes, significantly enhancing our output," said Gakweli. "We intend to work for longer hours to clear the cases pending before courts, given the new machines' larger capacity and ability to analyze many stains within a short time."
The new machines, acquired at Sh40 million, are the first genetic analysers designed with a specific feature set and workflow for human identification, allowing for DNA analysis within a short period of time.
The government plans to use the machines to solve many unsolved cases, including murder, robbery with violence, rape, and housebreaking, among others.
"We handle both public and private cases. Let those intending to conduct DNA tests come to us now," Gakweli added.
The government also intends to open a new office in Isiolo to address cases in the northern region.
As part of the government's efforts to enhance forensic capabilities, the Government Chemist was recently moved from the Ministry of Health to the Interior, where they will work with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation's forensic department.
