A Nairobi court has delivered a guilty verdict in a high-profile case involving a love triangle that turned deadly.
Leonard Kanari, a city businessman, was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Christopher Muganda, who was shot and killed at Garden Estate in Kasarani, Nairobi County in 2016.
According to the court ruling, Kanari used excessive force when he shot Muganda, who was unarmed, which is against the law.
Justice Jessy Lessit, who delivered the ruling, stated that the cause of death was bleeding from the gunshot wound at the abdomen.
The court also noted that Kanari did not prove self-defense, as he claimed to have acted in self-defense.
Furthermore, the court ruled that the case was a crime of passion, as Kanari was found at Muganda's house, and there was an inappropriate attack against Muganda by Kanari, who shot him.
In mitigation, Kanari expressed remorse and stated that he is married with three school-going children, and he prayed for a non-custodial sentence, as he is the breadwinner of his family.
It is reported that in May 2016, Kanari visited his girlfriend's apartment unannounced at around midnight and found her entertaining another man, leading to the fatal confrontation.
Kanari will be sentenced on September 7, 2019.
