Kenya Airways has been struggling financially, with a half-year loss of Sh8.56 billion, more than double the previous year's loss.

On August 29, 2019, the airline released a statement denying reports that it had received a Sh125 billion loan from the treasury.

According to the statement, the last time Kenya Airways received money from the government was in the fiscal year 2015/2016, when the government injected $217 million.

The airline attributed its increased operating costs to its expansion into new routes and the return of two Boeing 787 planes that had been sub-leased to Oman Air.

Earlier in April 2019, the treasury took a new Sh20 billion loan to help Kenya Airways repay another loan it borrowed from the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim) two years ago.

The loan was borrowed in June 2018 from the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank (TDB) and will cost the government at least Sh2 billion in interest expenses and other charges.
