Telkom Kenya has unveiled a partnership with Ericsson and NEC XON to expand mobile broadband infrastructure, targeting 2000 additional 4G sites by 2023. The initiative, valued at $100 million (Kshs 11.13 billion), seeks to quadruple existing 4G/LTE coverage from 590 sites to 2360, according to the company's digital transformation strategy.
Ceo Mugo Kibati stated the project will leverage both internal funding and external capital to enhance network accessibility. The expansion aims to improve digital inclusion by addressing affordability gaps and enabling broader participation in digital services.
The collaboration aligns with Telkom Kenya's long-term plan to strengthen fibre infrastructure, mobile networks, and financial services. The 4G rollout will extend coverage to 80% of the network, with initial focus on the Coast region.
"Our priorities include upgrading infrastructure to drive digital transformation across customer segments and bridge the digital divide through mobile data expansion. The partnership will launch a new network project guided by our growth strategy," Kibati said.
Ericsson's Todd Ashton emphasized Kenya's reliance on mobile networks, stating the collaboration will enhance coverage and data experiences. He linked the expansion to Kenya's Vision 2030, noting increased internet access could boost economic growth and support 5G deployment.
NEC XON's Willem Wentzel highlighted the partnership's role in improving quality of experience and expanding coverage, stating it would deliver world-class service to more customers.
