Telkom Kenya has partnered with Ericsson and NEC XON to expand its 4G/LTE network, with plans to add 2,000 sites by 2023. The initiative includes connecting over 200 educational institutions and 30 medical facilities to the internet, supporting remote learning and e-health services.

The project aligns with Telkom’s long-term strategy launched in 2020 during its organizational restructuring to drive digital transformation. The company emphasized investments in fibre infrastructure, mobile networks, and mobile money services as priorities for 2023 and beyond, citing Kenya’s Vision 2030 as a key framework.

Telkom CEO Mugo Kibati stated the expansion aims to bridge the digital divide by improving network coverage. He highlighted the importance of data access as a fundamental need, noting that the partnership will enable the rollout of advanced services like Madaraka Life while upgrading 4G capacity in the Coast region.

Ericsson’s Todd Ashton emphasized the collaboration’s role in expanding mobile coverage to support Kenya’s Vision 2030, while NEC XON’s Willem Wentzel described the project as a foundation for future 5G deployment. Both partners cited the initiative as critical to enhancing customer experience and regional connectivity.
