On August 29, 2019, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport announced that it had exercised its option with Valtteri Bottas for the 2020 Formula One season, confirming the Finnish driver as Lewis Hamilton's partner for the upcoming season.

Valtteri Bottas, 30, has been a part of the team since 2017 and has won five grand prix. He is currently second in the world championship standings behind Hamilton.

"I am very happy and proud to be part of the team for a fourth season and wish to thank every team member and the board of Mercedes for their trust and belief in me," Bottas said.

Team boss Toto Wolff praised Bottas's performance in 2019, calling it his best ever season. Wolff added that Bottas is "hungry for more and determined to keep on improving and raising his level," which is the mindset the team wants from all its members.
