Kenya is seeking to leave a lasting impression at the 2019 Chungju World Martial Arts Masterships in South Korea, a competition where the country finished third behind Iran and the Philippines in 2016.

Kenyan martial artists Lona Abiero and Gordon Ochieng have made history by bagging gold medals at the ongoing tournament, a significant achievement for the country.

Kenya's performance at the 2016 edition of the competition, which was held in Cheongju, South Korea, saw the country win one gold, two silver, and five bronze medals.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Kenya Tong Il Moo Do Federation President Clarence Mwakio expressed confidence in the team's ability to win five medals and secure the top spot.

"In our first appearance in 2016, we claimed the third spot but this year, our aim is to go for the top position. We have taken Tong Il Moo Do to the next level and we want to win this year's event," Mwakio said.

The 2019 edition of the competition has attracted over 4,000 participants from 100 countries, a significant increase from the 2016 event.

The tournament, which is under the patronage of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), has received support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other Olympic sports, including wrestling and taekwondo.
