On June 27, 2019, Homa Bay County Governor Cyprian Awiti was rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu after developing health complications while disbursing Ksh.100 million bursary funds at Orero Boys High School in Rangwe.

He was later referred to the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi on June 28, 2019, where he has been receiving treatment for about 26 days.

During his absence, Awiti's deputy, Hammington Orata, took charge and has been accused by Awiti's supporters of plotting to take over as governor.

Orata has been accused of seeking the services of a witch-doctor and was allegedly caught talking to a tortoise in his office, sparking a scathing onslaught from Awiti's supporters.

As Awiti continues to receive treatment, his supporters are calling for Orata's removal, citing his alleged involvement in the governor's health woes.
