Published on August 29, 2019, Dr Ekuru Aukot, leader of the Third Way Alliance party, has refuted claims by Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru that his Punguza Mzigo Bill was rejected by the Nyeri County Assembly.

Aukot made the remarks after presenting the bill to the Laikipia County assembly, where he noted that there is no way a bill can be rejected in an informal gathering without going through the normal bill procedures.

He further stated that some politicians who are against the bill are now threatening Members of County Assemblies who are supporting the bill.

Waiguru had earlier tweeted that the Mt Kenya region is fully behind the BBI recommendations and lauded what she termed as a great move by the County assembly in Nyeri to reject the Punguza Mzigo bill.

Aukot urged politicians to avoid making claims that they cannot substantiate, in response to Waiguru's remarks.

Nyeri County Assembly Speaker John Kagucia quickly rejoined, stating that the Bill had not been discussed and that once it is tabled for debate, MCAs will be at liberty to express their views freely.

Kagucia also warned against intimidation of MCAs, citing instances where MCAs from Siaya County have been threatened over the same bill.

Laikipia County MCAs have promised to subject the bill to public participation, allowing residents to give their views before the assembly votes to either pass or reject it.
