On August 29, 2019, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) cleared betting company Betway to operate in Kenya, bringing an end to a two-month period of dormancy.

Following clearance by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the issuance of an operating license by the BCLB, Betway Kenya announced the restoration of its services.

However, to comply with taxation laws, Betway will deduct 20% withholding tax from winnings, a measure that will be clearly displayed on individual bet slips for transparency and ease of understanding.

The collected tax will be remitted directly to KRA on behalf of punters.

As Betway joins the Kenyan betting industry, it joins competitor Betika in deducting 20% withholding tax from winnings, a move that has attracted negative comments from gamblers on social media.

Despite this, Betway has launched a campaign to promote responsible betting, dubbed 'Bet the Responsible Way', to ensure its customers understand the fundamentals of betting and avoid addiction.

The company has also instituted measures to ensure only individuals of age can register and enjoy its services.

Furthermore, Betway has played a significant role in community sport development, cutting across different sport disciplines, and has launched new features, including a revised 4-to-Score and Win Boost feature.
